    Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing with Oracle Exadata Database Machine Demonstrates Extreme Performance for Utility Bill Processing

    New Data Reveals Speeds of 16,500 Bills Generated per Minute

    Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing 2.3.1 running with Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 processed an unprecedented 16,500 bills per minute or 993,240 bills per hour.1 In tests, a typical night’s billing run for a utility with one million customers—47,600 bills— was processed in 2.87 minutes.
    The test used 12 months of historical financial data for a typical distribution company with one million accounts: 80 percent residential, 18 percent commercial, 2 percent industrial (interval billing).
    As utilities plan new service options and programs including smart grid, responding to emerging customer and community needs is a top priority. Internally, utilities need to deliver, for example, pre-paid utilities services, demand response and near-real-time access to customer data while maintaining bill throughput for timely revenue flow. Thus, a utility using a monthly billing cycle typically needs to plan for approximately 21 overnight billing runs per month, in addition to unanticipated delays.

    Testing Details

    The high rate of throughput was achievable primarily due to the increased input/output capacity in Exadata, which features highly tuned and balanced elements of computing, storage and networking that adapt and scale predictably. Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing on Exadata required fewer input/output operations—only 48.5 per bill on average, while a non-Exadata server typically required 73.7.
    Test results indicate ample room for additional growth (scaling), as the Exadata quarter rack database server with two RAC nodes was utilized less than 55 percent at the benchmark level.2
    Testing was completed on a quarter rack Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 running Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Application Clusters with Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing 2.3.1 on the application tier running on Oracle’s Sun Fire X4770 server.
    Built using industry standard hardware components, and intelligent database and storage software from Oracle, Oracle Exadata Database Machine powers the largest and most important OLTP and data warehousing applications up to 10x faster than before.

    Oracle has named Rodger E. Smith senior vice president and general manager for the Oracle Tax and Utilities Global Business Unit. In this position, Mr. Smith leads the global business unit’s solution groups, strategic planning, product development, sales, service and support.

    Integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager Diagnostics Packs: allows performance testers to see how Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Database behave during load and performance tests using Oracle’s built-in diagnostic instrumentation – enabling testers to pin-point performance issues and help determine ways to solve them quickly.
    Oracle Test Manager: delivers new test planning capabilities, including a pre-defined template to support Capgemini Group’s TMap® methodology, to allow Quality Assurance (QA) managers to have better control over the test planning and processes used. The new test planning module allows QA Managers to manage test planning documents or templates related to their testing process and methodology. All documents and templates are stored and managed in Oracle Test Manager’s database and are visible through a tree view for easy access to process descriptions, check lists and links to test requirements. This new capability provides QA managers a better overview of processes, check lists, and potential risks that need to be addressed during a testing project.

    By leveraging the capabilities of Oracle Financials Accounting Hub, part of Oracle E-Business Suite Financials, McLane was able to configure all accounting rules in a centralized location, enabling it to efficiently reconcile detailed and auditable accounting information from a variety of source systems.
    Oracle General Ledger provides a fast and scalable platform to automate financial processing, enabling McLane to reduce the manual processes that were needed every period to book and reconcile transactions by up to three days.
    In addition, by integrating with the company’s business intelligence tool, the new Oracle powered financial system has improved the quality and detail of financial reporting, enabling more specific reporting, such as sales reports by product.
    McLane has been an Oracle customer since 2009 when it deployed the Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12. To further automate, centralize and standardize transactional processes, McLane is also using Oracle Payables and Oracle Internet Expenses.

    Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle’s SPARC Enterprise M9000 Server with 64 SPARC64 VII+ 3.0 GHz quad-core processors, delivered a record result of 206,360 fully business processed assembly orders per hour – the highest score ever posted with the SAP ATO standard application benchmark.
    The SAP ATO benchmark captures the process of creating a final assembly order for such products as PCs, pumps and cars across components of SAP Business Suite software. The benchmark assumes high-volume sales and short production times reflective of today’s production environments. The most recent version of the SAP ATO standard application benchmark is based on the latest Unicode-based release of the SAP enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 with more complete business functionality. The benchmark also places higher CPU demand on the system due to the reduced response time requirement present in the SAP standard application benchmark environment.
