by admin on November 27, 2009

The wing sail leaves the tent, is positioned and raised on the BOR 90, prior to a short test sail in San Diego Bay.

Truly awe-inspiring. The biggest wing ever constructed. And they just shoved it on the boat and went sailing. The AC (at least the TRUE AC) was always about best technology and best preparation. The way BMWO have done this is right along that track.

Next question – will the Alinghi team be ferreting away in Villeneuve making one of their own?

tjpeco November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

I disagree. BMWO wanted to participate in an event where they had a reasonable chance of winning. The poodles just need to get on the water in front of the TV cameras in order for their shops not to fold due to lack of sponsorship money.

I think that one thing we can duly credit BMWO for – is that they’re responsible for both of these awesome machines being built and displayed for the world to see.

Ernesto even said – “I almost have to thank Larry for making me built it (Cheezy)”

Yep, not saying either team is blameless, but there were over ten IACC challengers signed up. Now it’s 1v1 in prohibitively expensive (if impressive) one-offs, and that is BOR’s fault.

(fast) multihulls do not fly traditional spinnakers. They fly screechers if anything. At any rate, the wing does not require such a sail because the AWA is always close to the nose. A headsail would only disturb the airflow over the wing.

BOR has repeatedly stated that they’d Mutual Consent to an AC32 protocol. Unfortunately, SNG/Alinghi refused to do it. They tried to setup a sham Yacht Club called CNEV through which they could have absolute iron-fisted control of the event. It was bullocks to begin with – and Alinghi has continued the shenanigans up to this very day with the bogus NOR they just posted. 15 knots windspeed limit and 1m waves? Good luck with that Alinghi – you HAVE to race on Feb 8,10,12 and NO RC can abandon

I’m sure each side thinks they’re in the right. I certainly hope so rather than it being attemts to gain advantages. As an outsider it is dreadful though. It’s all a bit Formula 1 – 30% racing, 70% litigation and penilisation rather than competition and sportsmanship.

The 32nd AC was great, but now BOR has bullied themselves into a 1 on 1 instead of preceding through the LV rounds. The 32 format was good – big fleet of potential challengers and massive spectator interest. now – meh.

How does it perform downwind? Is the wing adjusted to be effective on its own, or the good ‘ol spinnaker still has to go up?

I am the man. As a matter of fact.

Glad we got that out of the way.

(Please do not tell ISAF about my “pro” status ok? I wont be able to race in Wednesday night beercan races)

Costa75 November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

“My boat looks pretty damn similar to this one…”
“stereotypical 4 knot Sh*tbox”
You don’t realy think that i argue with a pro like you.
Good boy. Yeah… You are the man. Cool.
HAHAHAHA

Oh and as for the interest level with the “everyday sailors” who don’t have a boat that looks like this….

The live video feed thread on Sailing Anarchy had the most concurrent users watching it in the site’s history. I’d call that a buttload of interest….

tjpeco November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

You’ve got to be kidding me right? The only reason why BMWO has GONE to court in the first place is to make this event a sportsmanlike event! Have you even looked into the shenanigans that SNG/Alinghi have been trying to pull? Thank GOD that LE / BMWO have the testicular fortitude to call out Bertarelli and his travesty of a trustee stewardship on the BS that they’ve tried to pull.

I love how BMWO showed off their new weapon in front of the whole world today. Eat it Alinghi. Eat it.

tjpeco November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Of course it looks like a sailing boat. It doesn’t look like your stereotypical 4 knot Sh^tbox because its actually supposed to go fast. My boat looks pretty damn similar to this one – minus the hard wing of course – and you can guarantee that if given the chance, I’d have Ben Hall make me a wingsail like he did for his A-Cat.
Backwards thinking baffoons like you are what keeps sailing out of the mainstream.

maddog155 November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

This is incredibly cool. Can’t wait to see more.

Costa75 November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Impressive wing, but this doesn’t look like a sailing boat. The reasons why people loved the 32nd AC where clear. There where teams of sailors with real boats, sails and sailing action. What all the sailors do at their weekends in big on a professional level. We don’t have wings on our boats! We have sails. This is ridiculous…. Anywa: Nice video

highlyerratic November 27, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Good technology, just a shame BOR forced all this through the courts rather than stuck with the only recently established AC gameplan.
Sportsmanship – it’s an interesting word.

Awe-striking… Very interested in the trimming ability of the foil.

Nice video.

The BOR boat looks ridiculous now with the wing on , hope it does not come down on you like the last rig did ;)
